What Is a Concrete Overlay?

A concrete overlay is a thin layer of polymer-modified cementitious material applied over existing concrete. When the existing surface is structurally sound but visually worn — stained by oil, weathered gray, surface-scaled from salt crystallization — an overlay restores the appearance at 20–40% of the cost of a full replacement.

What Overlays Can Achieve

  • Cover oil stains, rust marks, and discoloration on driveways
  • Resurface a bleached, scaled pool deck to look new
  • Apply a new decorative pattern (stamped, slate texture, smooth) over plain concrete
  • Create a uniform appearance across a patio repaired in sections over the years

Overlay vs. Full Replacement — When Each Makes Sense

Overlay works when the existing concrete is structurally intact (no settled sections, no significant cracking from below). If the substrate has movement cracks, the overlay will eventually reflect those cracks — we'll tell you honestly if your surface is a good candidate. When it is, an overlay is significantly better value than tearing out and repourinh.

Overlay Cost on Gulf Blvd

Concrete overlays cost $3–$8 per square foot for standard micro-topping systems. Decorative stamped overlays run $8–$14 per square foot. Surface preparation — pressure washing, crack filling, mechanical grinding — is included in our estimates.
